Motorcycling Kinship in Norway

Rain taps the gear, nighttime hangs over the fjord, and I’m recording from a ship’s deck in Norway, far from my usual home base in Loveland, Colorado. What started as a delayed 40th wedding anniversary trip quickly turns into something bigger: a reminder that the world can feel enormous on a map, yet strangely close when you meet the right people.

Karen and I come to Norway carrying a lot of gratitude, and we get to live it out through real connections, not just sightseeing. We reunite with Maria, a former exchange student from Oslo who once lived with us, now building her own family. We also look ahead to Sweden next, where Karen’s roots pull us toward cousins and conversations that make travel feel personal.

Then we walk through old cobblestone streets and run into a motorcycle meetup. Different machines show up side by side, Harleys, BMWs, Ducati, Yamaha, Honda Goldwings, and somehow the brands do not matter. What hits me is the instant sense of belonging: riders as brothers and sisters, good people with a shared love for nature, community, and the calm thrill of motorcycling. It is a motorcycle podcast moment that speaks to rider camaraderie worldwide, even when you’re thousands of miles from your own garage.

Rainy Fjord Introduction

Hello everyone. This is Ron Francis from Loveland, Colorado, but I'm not in Colorado right now. Actually, far from it. I am in from Norway in a fjord. And it is just breathtaking. More specifically, I'm in full rain gear. It's raining. It's nighttime. I'm out on a deck right now where the ships usually come in. And my wife and I just had a wonderful dinner.

Anniversary Trip And Nordic Reunions

I'll get to motorcycling in just a second, but just a little bit more background. This past June, my wife and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Praise God for her. How she has managed to put up with me all these years with my motorcycle problem is amazing. But yes, this past June was our 40th wedding anniversary. But our daughter was also expecting her second child at that time, so we decided to delay the trip until now. And so here we are in enjoying Norway. As part of this trip, also, which was really, really cool, is the fact that my wife and I had an exchange student live with us about 15 years ago. And she's from Norway, she was from Oslo. So just a few days ago, we were able to meet up with her and her husband and her baby boy, and she's expecting another boy anytime now. And it was a wonderful reunion with her. Her name's Maria. And at the end of this trip, we are going to be taking a train over to Sweden. My wife is 100% Swedish, but we're going over to Sweden to meet up with one of her cousins and her family over in Sweden, so we're looking forward to that.

Finding A Motorcycle Meetup Abroad

But in this very unproduced, unpolished episode, I just wanted to share with you an experience that I had, that Karen and I had last night, actually. We were in a beautiful city and walking around through the old cobblestone streets, and there was a group of motorcycles. It was a motorcycle meetup out there. And what was so interesting is that even though I'm thousands and thousands of miles away from home, away from the United States that I'm used to, these were brothers and sisters. Once again, these were brothers and sisters who ride motorcycles, and they're good people. Just like I've experienced, and maybe you have to, good, good people who just happen to have a passion for riding motorcycles, for being out into nature, to enjoy the community, to enjoy the thrill of motorcycling, the relaxation of motorcycling. That's exactly what I picked up from that group. It was a mix of a couple of Harleys, Ducotis, BMWs, I saw a couple of Yamaha's, just Honda Goldwings, saw a couple of those, and it's just quite a mix. But we were indeed family. Just felt very much at home walking amongst them. And that's a beautiful thing. I guess that's why we need

Why Good People Rarely Make News

to travel. So that we can just learn that this world, yeah, it's huge, but it's small too. There are just wonderful people all around the world. And it's the good people that don't make it to the news. It's the bad, crazy people that often end up on the news or some kind of tragedy or whatever. But and that's sad. But the reality is, is the great, great, great majority of our world is made up of good, good people. And a lot of those people, some of those people, happen to ride motorcycles, and that's what I saw last night. Good people. These are brothers and sisters. I could ride up on my own bike with them, and I'm sure they'd let me join right up and go for a ride with them. So I guess I share all this as I'm experiencing, and my wife is experiencing this incredibly beautiful, beautiful world. We're also experiencing too the incredibly beautiful, beautiful people that live in it.

So let's be loud about the joy of life. Let's let others see a smile on your face and wonder why you're smiling. Because again, there's just too much bad news out there. And there are bad things happening in the world. Very, very true. But there are also so many good things happening in the world. Good, good things. So let's put on a smile, let's say hello, and let's continue to reach out to our brothers and sisters around the world, whether they ride a motorcycle or not. And just express in some way that we care. So I think that's what I have today, tonight, in the rain, by Fjord, in Norway. God bless you all. Take care.
